DIY Sock Bun

Obviously, the sock bun doesn't seem to be as popular as it used to be - but that doesn't stop me from wearing one!

I think that it's a really versatile hairdo, and one that never gets old. You can do a half-up one, you could do a high one, low one, loose one, tight one, braided one, twisted one, messy one.... the options are nearly endless!

However, a lot of people seem to think that the only way to make a sock bun is to go out and buy the sock bun form. While it's only a few dollars, you can save that money and create one yourself, while re-using an old sock! (Make sure to wash it first, though!)

How to make a Sock Bun form:

Materials needed: Old (clean) sock, scissors

Instructions: Cut off the toe of your old yet clean sock. It's okay if there are a few holes in the rest of the sock, as the material will be rolled up to hid them. Starting at the top of the sock, roll the material over itself until you reach the hole at the bottom. It should simply begin to roll up on itself, forming a nice sock bun form. Now you have a nice (and free!) sock bun form!

But what do you do with it? I know that I described a lot of things that you can do with them above, but detail wasn't given. Here's how to make the basic bun using a sock bun form.

Hair supplies needed: Brush, comb, hairspray/water (optional), sock bun form, hair elastic.

Instructions: Begin by brushing through your hair to remove any knots or tangles. I like to brush my hair straight back, but if you prefer to have a part, you can do that, too. Once your hair is knot-free, comb it up into a ponytail. I like to make my ponytails by leaning back and pulling all of my hair up to about the crown or a little below the crown of my head, and then comb the sides up to smooth it out. Once you have made your ponytail and wrapped the elastic around it, place the sock bun around the ponytail so that it is sitting on your head, around the elastic. I like to do this by grabbing the end of my ponytail and pulling it through the hole of the sock bun form. Then, tilt your head forwards and spread the hair from the ponytail over the sock bun form. Slide a smaller elastic around the hair and sock bun form, and then twist the remaining hair and secure it with bobby pins. You can add a bit of water or hairspray to keep the hairdo in, if you'd like. That's one way to create a sock bun!

I'd love to see how you make sock buns! Attach a picture in the comments if you'd like, and it just might show up here! :-)

Thanks,

-Liz
