Who taught you to crochet?

Crocheting is mainly learned in one of two ways: Someone from your family taught you, or you taught yourself. For me, it was my Grandma who offered to teach me crochet. At that point, I was probably 6 or 7, so I didn't really have much of an interest in doing something where you have to sit down for more than 5 minutes.

However, I don't think that I really would have thought to try out crochet if it hadn't been for her.

My first real "yarn journey", or whatever you want to call it, was when I discovered knitting. This was probably about two years ago. We had a couple of balls of yarn (mainly pink, as that's the yarn color that girls apparently like), and some large wooden knitting needles. I think they were size 13, or something like that. I thought it was good to start off with a large size. Boy, was I wrong! Since I was only using a worsted-weight yarn, the stitches were gigantic and loopy, and didn't look anything like what was in the book. So I gave it up.

Then, a couple of months ago, I found a great knitting book at a thrift store (goooooo thrift stores!) that showed how to knit and how to figure out what size knitting needle you need. That was definitely helpful! After reading through that, I realized that size 13 needles were not what I needed for worsted weight yarn. But knitting needles are expensive, and, being a kid, I didn't have a ton of money. So how did I end up with more knitting needles than I knew what do do with? Simple! My dad had bought a giant box of knitting needles at a yard sale (yes, a yard sale), and they were in great condition. He had gotten them for my mom several years ago, but she'd never really gotten into knitting. So guess who inherited them!

Awhile after I started knitting, I started to look for some charities to donate knitted things to. That's when I found Knots of Love and the FBF doll organization. Knots of Love was great because you can choose to either knit or crochet hats. I started with Knots of Love, but then decided that, while it was fun, I'd kind of like to do something more personal. That's when I moved on to the FBF doll organization. However, that posed a problem - I didn't know how to crochet. Thankfully, my Grandma knew how, and she had given me and my mom lots of supplies for crocheting! So I guess you could say that I fell into both categories - I was taught by someone, and I taught myself, too.

Who taught you how to crochet? Let me know in the comments!
